Proposed Lightrail Line Route Shortened

ANOKA, MN-The Northstar Corridor Development Authority will ask for funding for a 40-mile line that will go only halfway to St. Cloud.

ANOKA, MN-The Northstar Corridor Development Authority recently has approved a resolution to shorten the proposed Northstar Commuter Rail route, and will ask the 2004 Minnesota Legislature to approve state funding for a 40-mile segment of service from Big Lake-to-Minneapolis.

The decision to shorten the line—which was originally intended to go to St. Cloud, about twice as far—was made in response to recently released data indicating that this modified proposal can meet a new cost-effectiveness index used by the Federal Transit Administration to evaluate transit projects. Meeting this requirement is necessary to receive federal New Starts funding.
