A number of area real estate concerns were acknowledged at an event designed to raise awareness of initiatives to utilize renewable energy sources. The Durst Organization's, whose 4 Times Square has recognized nationally as one of the nation's most "green" buildings, has become New York State's largest commercial customer of wind power.
The company is making an annual purchase of approximately 10.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean and renewable "Green Power," which consists of NewWind Energy, a product of Community Energy Inc., for its 7.5-million-sf portfolio of seven high-rise office buildings in Manhattan.
"Green Power" is clean, renewable energy generated in New York State that is now available to all residential, commercial, industrial and government energy users in New York City, as well as Westchester, Rockland, and Orange counties.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority supports the "Green Power" initiative by providing funding for marketing support. The Durst Organization's wind power purchase represents 10% of the total energy consumed in the company's New York properties.
"The message has to get out," Jorge Lopez, vice president of commodity and energy services for ConEd Solutions, tells GlobeSt.com, noting that an effort on the grassroots level is being undertaken and that examples like the Durst properties help get the message across as the importance of using renewable energy sources. He notes that there has been large response from residential customers interested in the initiative.
A number of corporations and organizations in the area now use NewWind Energy®. These so-called "Green Power pioneers" include: The Pocantico Conference Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region II Headquarters, The Brooklyn Brewery, the Ford Foundation, MetLife, The United Nations – Senior Executive Residence, 1400 On Fifth, Walton Street Capital, Community Housing Innovations, Pace University, St. John Associates, Bank Street College, U.S. SSA, and Pep Boys. Cushman & Wakefield, the largest commercial property manager in New York City, managing about 52-million sf, was also one of several companies acknowledged at the ceremony.
Collectively, these customers purchase the output of more than six of the 1.5 megawatt windmills at the Fenner Wind Power Project. These purchases together deliver an environmental benefit equivalent to the planting of more than two million trees or reducing automobile usage by 27 million miles.
