Tier 1 supplier Johnson Controls says it has shelved plans to build a new $160 million automotive headquarters in the township, largely due to cost concerns and to apprehension about delays in the project.
The 360-acre site along Joy and Napier roads, which the company bought more than two years ago, is being put up for sale.
Bill Dawson, spokesman for the Milwaukee-based firm, said the company pulled the plug because it would take too long for Salem Township to have planning and infrastructure needs in place in a timely manner.
The auto supplier, which makes vehicle seats, has outgrown its current facility at Haylard Road in Plymouth. It bought the vacant land in neighboring Salem Township to consolidate its operations in the area and to accommodate future growth. The company is now looking for new site, similar to the Salem Township parcel.
In a statement, Keith Wandell, president of Johnson Controls Automotive Group, said the firm's long-term needs for improvements to its technical center haven't changed. "However we are committed to finding a more cost-effective and timely solution to meet those needs."
