Wixom-based Schonsheck is working with Marshall's, a Michaels and a Pier One, to fill the HQ location, according to the township.
In addition, Panera Bread is looking to build one of its restaurants on a lot at the HQ site, and the now-closed Cookers restaurant in front of the former home improvement store is attracting interest, township Supervisor Tom Yack said.
The former HQ has been empty for about five years. Kmart closed its Canton Super K in 2002. At about the same time, Wal-Mart moved ahead with plans to establish one of its namesake stores, along with a Sam's Club, less than a mile away.
The plan to turn the 175,000 sf Kmart site into a recreation center is especially attractive, township leaders say, because the building would not be demolished, but would be able to be used with only interior renovation.
