Stadiums: Twin Cities for Baseball, Suburbs for Football

ST. PAUL-Stadium panel likes bids from St. Paul and Minneapolis for baseball ballpark, and favors Blaine or Eden Prairie for a new football stadium.

ST. PAUL-A Twins ballpark should be built in St. Paul or Minneapolis, and a Vikings stadium should go in Blaine or Eden Prairie, Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s advisory panel recommended this week. As for the University of Minnesota, the committee recommended a separate bill to deal with its request for help in financing a campus stadium, for which the U of M believes it can raise 60% of the $222 million cost.

Like the other stadiums, the final decision would be up to the governor and legislature. Moreover, it depends on whether the governor and the legislature fund any stadiums at all.

The governor’s stadium screening committee also decided that if Pawlenty and lawmakers choose to help the teams build stadiums, they should create an impartial entity to select sites and negotiate terms with the teams, based on financing criteria set by legislation. But if the committee and the legislature selected specific sites that could make it tougher to pass a bill, as legislators from communities that lost out would fight the bill.
