DETROIT-General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG’s decision to join a legal challenge to block the development of two new hospitals in the suburbs comes as senior leaders of the three big US auto companies are becoming more vocal about the competitive disadvantage their unionized US operations face. Henry Ford Health System and St. John Health each plan to build a new hospital in Oakland County. The two would have a combined total of about 500 beds.

The automakers worry that the hospitals would add unneeded costs and lead to overcapacity in Detroit’s Oakland County suburbs. Others opposing the building plan, in a lawsuit filed in Ingham County Circuit Court, are the United Auto Workers and automotive supply giants Delphi, Visteon, Lear and others.
