With $500 in hand, Barton founded the C.O. Barton Company in 1924 and counted Michigan Bell and the automobile manufacturers were early clients. The business really took off when Arnold Malow joined the firm three years later. The firm's name was changed to Barton Malow in 1932.
Today the company is focused on several areas of expertise: health care, stadiums, education and corporate/industrial facilities. "We understand that we can't be all things to all people," Maibach said. "Saying no is often the biggest challenge in business. We have elected to focus and provide extraordinary service on the projects we pursue." Revenues for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2003 were in excess of $1 billion, the company says.
