Construction Firm Hits 80

SOUTHFIELD, MI-Well-known construction firm Barton Malow is marking its 80th year of commercial construction in and around the Detroit area.

SOUTHFIELD, MI-Barton Malow, a Southfield-based commercial construction contractor which is perhaps the biggest such firm in the state, is marking its 80th anniversary in 2004. The firm started with a single office — with Carl Barton’s $500 in 1924 — and now has operations in four states in addition to Michigan. “In my 40 years at Barton Malow, I have seen tremendous progress and can attest to the great things many people, over many years, have made possible,” says Ben Maibach III, president and CEO. “I am confident that at future milestone dates, we will be known as we are today, as a company built on the quality of its people. Many firms we competed against 30 or more years ago are no longer in business.”

With $500 in hand, Barton founded the C.O. Barton Company in 1924 and counted Michigan Bell and the automobile manufacturers were early clients. The business really took off when Arnold Malow joined the firm three years later. The firm’s name was changed to Barton Malow in 1932.
