Fight On to Keep Another Greenville Manufacturer

GREENVILLE, MI-Another manufacturing plant in Greenville area could soon be on the closure list, but the state and the city of Greenville are struggling to prevent that.

GREENVILLE, MI-Two weeks after Electrolux announced it would be closing its 1.7 million sf, 2,700 employee refrigerator plant here, auto supplier Federal Mogul says it may soon close its Greenville operations. Federal Mogul, a Southfield-based company that is a global supplier, manufacturer and marketer of original and aftermarket automotive equipment, has said it will consider moving approximately 500 St. Johns employees and another 300 in Greenville out of the country to reduce its bottom line.

Union leaders at the Greenville plant say Federal Mogul wants wage concessions to improve its bottom line. Greenville and the state, which put together an incentive package of more than $31 million in tax breaks in a failed attempt to keep the Electrolux plant open, say they will fight to keep Federal Mogul jobs and operations here.

“The state of Michigan is serious about keeping these jobs,” Gov. Jennifer Granholm said in a telephone call Thursday to Federal Mogul President and CEO Chip McClure. “Michigan will make an aggressive and compelling case to keep their jobs in this state. While the company made it clear that they sincerely want to keep their Greenville and St. Johns plants open, they also made it clear that their financial situation dictates that they examine all possibilities.”
