The project is seen by many as a key step toward revitalizing Pontiac's downtown area, which has been blighted for a good many years. Leaders of the effort to revitalize the old theater say past delays from unexpected problems make them hesitant to target an exact date for the opening.

A campaign to allow people to "buy a seat" in the new theater has now been launchd and is expected to generate about $1.1 million to help further the project. The new complex will be managed by the nonprofit Strand Theatre Center Inc. The Pontiac Growth Group owns the buildings. Detroit-based White Construction is construction manager.
