Conservation Group Buys Steelcase Reserve

WHITE CLOUD, MI-The Nature Conservancy has purchased Camp Swampy, a 1,017-acre corporate retreat in west central Michigan in a $1.83 million deal.

WHITE CLOUD, MI-In a deal worth $1.83 million, a 1,017-acre retreat owned by office furniture maker Steelcase has been preserved for public use. The land, about five miles south of White Cloud and mostly in Newago County’s Wilcox Township in west central Michigan, is adjacent to the Huron-Manistee National Forest and was purchased by the The Nature Conservancy. The Conservancy hopes to eventually sell the land to the U.S. Forest Service when public funds become available.

The property, known as Camp Swampy, was owned for more than 20 years by Steelcase, which allowed employees to use it for camping and other recreational uses. A 150-acre campground area that was part of the retreat was not included in the deal, though Steelcase continues to look for a buyer. Steelcase put the land up for sale about a year ago, saying that few employees used the property and that the company needed to focus on its core manufacturing operations.
