Boston Scientific to Unveil Major Expansion

MAPLE GROVE, MN-Plans are now under way for a new research and development complex totaling at least 120,000 sf.

MAPLE GROVE, MN-Boston Scientific will unveil expansion plans Tuesday for a new research and development facility at the firm’s stent division campus in Maple Grove. Although the Natick, MA-based medical device firm declined to detail its plans Friday, city officials in Maple Grove say the company tells them that the new building would start at two stories totaling 120,000 sf. It eventually could be larger. The city also expects that Boston Scientific will add from 300 to 600 new employees over the next two years or so. Gov. Tim Pawlenty, US Sen. Norm Coleman and Rep. Jim Ramstad, R-MN, will attend a press conference at the Maple Grove campus.

The division—formerly called Scimed—has already added hundreds of jobs in Maple Grove since last summer, most of them related to its new Taxus drug-coated stent, which was developed in Maple Grove. The new stent is expected to get regulatory approval to be sold in the US in a matter of days or weeks. Securities analysts think Boston Scientific will capture a major share of a market that could reach $5 billion in annual sales in the next year or two.
