BELMONT, MA-The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is in the process of developing a request for proposal for the air rights at the Waverly Square commuter rail station on Trapelo Road. The move is part of Gov. Mitt Romney’s recently proposed “smart growth” initiative which aims to concentrate development in towns and cities near transportation centers.

Joe Pesaturo, a spokesperson for the MBTA, tells GlobeSt.com that the air rights at the Belmont station are one of the first being developed as part of the initiative. He says that the MBTA is cooperating with the town and is writing the RFP with officials from Belmont. “The proposal is what the town desires and what the developer is willing to do,” he says.
