Flint Hills Proposes $400M Upgrade

ROSEMOUNT, MN-The 18-month refinery project, which could create 500 construction jobs, is in response to tighter federal pollution standards.

ROSEMOUNT, MN-With tighter pollution standards for diesel fuel a little more than two years away, Flint Hills Resources says it is proposing a $325 million to $400 million upgrade at its Rosemount refinery. The project, expected to last 18 months and produce 500 construction jobs, will enable the refinery to produce cleaner-burning low-sulfur fuel—meeting the tighter federal standards set by the federal government for the year 2006.

To meet the requirement, Flint Hills has proposed building two new processing units that remove sulfur from petroleum products, three large storage tanks and expanding the cooling tower capacity. The construction project is not expected to increase crude-oil processing capacity at the large Pine Bend refinery southeast of St. Paul.
