To make room for the hotel, the locally based developer recently demolished La Concha Motel, a 1960's-era landmark hotel that has been featured in movies and hosted Muhammad Ali, Ronald Reagan and other celebrities over the years. The property is located just south of the Riviera, across the Strip from the Stardust.

The development will include a Conrad-branded hotel, the Majestic Resort and Residences, and an upscale dining, shopping and entertainment complex. The hotel and residences will be located in what Hilton and Majestic are touting as two of the tallest buildings in Las Vegas. Taking advantage of its proximity to the Las Vegas Convention Center, amenities will include a business center and offices, 13 meeting and boardroom facilities and two ballrooms, as well as a spa, fitness center and Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool.

Representatives of Conrad Hotels and Majestic did not return phone calls seeking further comment. According to the company's website, Majestic's main business is Majestic Entertainment, which produces straight-to-video movies. The company lists eight titles on its website.

The La Concha Motel, designed with a distinctive, shell-shaped sign by famed Los Angeles architect Paul Revere Williams, is not the only famous 1960's era hotel here that is disappearing to make way for new development. The El Morocco and its circular lobby, located just south of the La Concha site at 2975 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is slated to be replaced by a 520-ft hotel tower and a 645-ft condo tower with a shopping mall. The project received approval in 2001.
