GEMA is a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi. The new facility will provide 450,000 sf of additional manufacturing space for production of a new family of four-cylinder aluminum engines to be used in a variety of future vehicles.
"All the locations had attractive elements," says GEMA president Bruce Coventry. "But when all is said and done, we had everything we needed right here--including a number of great partnerships with the state and with the village." GEMA was considering more than six sites in four different states before it decided to build the new facility in Michigan.
"Global Engine has chosen Dundee, and Michigan, not once, but twice," Gov. Jennifer Granholm says. "The company's decision to continue to grow here is a testament to the area workforce and the collaborative efforts of state, local, business and labor organizations. This project is proof that Michigan remains competitive in the challenging global fight to keep manufacturing investment and jobs."
The MEDC awarded Single Business Tax credits worth up to approximately $21.6 million over a 20-year period and up to $400,000 in Economic Development Job Training (EDJT) grants to sweeten the pot and influence GEMA to select Michigan.
