JV Announces New Engine Plant for Dundee

DUNDEE, MI-The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, a joint venture of three automakers, says it will build a 450,000-sf engine plant in Monroe County. State tax credits helped smooth the way for the deal.

DUNDEE, MI-A joint venture by three international automakers will build a new $323-million engine plant in southeastern Michigan. The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) says it will build the facility, its second automotive engine factory in the city, which is in Monroe County, south of Detroit. More than $21 million in state tax credits helped cement the deal.

GEMA is a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi. The new facility will provide 450,000 sf of additional manufacturing space for production of a new family of four-cylinder aluminum engines to be used in a variety of future vehicles.

“All the locations had attractive elements,” says GEMA president Bruce Coventry. “But when all is said and done, we had everything we needed right here–including a number of great partnerships with the state and with the village.” GEMA was considering more than six sites in four different states before it decided to build the new facility in Michigan.
