$85M Apartment Expected to Liven Up Block of Hotels

WASHINGTON, DC-Development of the Sovereign at 2400 M Street has gotten under way with a recent ground breaking ceremony for the 341-unit luxury apartment building. JBG Cos. affiliate EQR-JBG 2400 Residential LLC is behind the $85 million, WDG Architecture PLLC-designed project, which is expected to be ready for occupancy toward the end of next year.

Occupying what was once a parking lot where 24th and M streets meet, the Sovereign is one of three residential developments that will add a new flavor to an intersection about halfway between the popular Georgetown and Dupont Circle neighborhoods. Known as Square 25, the block is characterized by a high concentration of hotels–the Park Hyatt and the Fairmont Washington, to name two. “Back in the 80s, there was a relatively large development of the area–mostly hotels, but then it stayed dormant all the way to Georgetown,” WDG Architecture’s Durwood Dixon tells GlobeSt.com. “But there are two buildings going up on this street, which will add a great deal of life. And it’s not just us; there is a lot of residential development coming to this area. It’s just going to become more alive, it will be active.”
