Hamline-Midway residents and a community coalition called University United oppose the CVS proposal, arguing that the chain's suburban-style plan clashes with neighborhood calls for more pedestrian-friendly development on University Avenue. CVS added windows to the University side, but that was not enough to quell opposition.
Drug-store chain CVS has submitted site plans for its first store in St. Paul, a 13,000-sf, one-story structure at the northwest corner of University and Snelling avenues. Rhode Island-based CVS also has submitted plans for stores in Eagan and Burnsville, according to the chains local developer, Velmeir Cos. CVS hopes to open it before the end of 2004. The Planning Commission is expected to take up the issue later this month.
