GAITHERSBURG, MD-The National Institute of Standards and Technology, a century-old division of the US Department of Commerce’s Technology Administration, has opened the doors of its 537,000-sf Advanced Measurement Laboratory for research following a construction endeavor that began just over three years ago. A joint venture consisting of Bethesda, MD-based the Clark Construction Group and Beltsville, MD’s Gilford Corp. recently wrapped up work on the state-of-the-art project, which cost $184 million to complete–not including the high-tech equipment that contributes to the facility’s status as one of the most technologically advanced buildings in the world.

“The AML is the world-class facility that will provide the US with global leadership in measurements and standards, and set the foundation for technological advances well into the 21st century,” then-Secretary of Commerce William Daley said in a statement from the 2000 groundbreaking ceremony.
