Kraus-Anderson plans to raze Brighton Village Shopping Center, which is located just off the interstate on Silver Lake Road, and build a 31,000-sf retail and service center and a 28,000-sf, two-story medical office building on the site. Snyder's Drug, the current anchor of the existing 70,000-sf center, is slated to get a new 12,500-sf freestanding building.
The first issue concerns access to and from the adjacent Sinclair gas station through the northeast corner of the station property. In addition, Snyder Drug filed for Chapter 11 reorganization last September, subsequently closing a number of area stores. While the company intends to stay at this location, leadership has changed and decisions about the specific location of the building and its lease have been affected.
Four years ago, the retail center, now more than 30 years old, suffered the departure of its anchor tenant--Lund's grocery store. That forced Kraus-Anderson to plan for redevelopment, city officials say. Earlier plans including a hotel and senior housing project were abandoned in 2002 as the area hotel market weakened.
