ANN ARBOR, MI-Work has begun on a three-year, $26 million renovation of the Literature, Science and Arts building on the University of Michigan campus. The building, which was built in 1948 on South State Street, has become outdated for its current use, says Bob Johnston, director of facilities for LS&A. For instance, one main corridor of the building has a large counter with cashier windows, reflecting a time when students stopped by to make transactions, such as getting a copy of a transcript. Today, much of the business is conducted online, and the space is no longer needed, Johnston explains.

Two small parking lots to the west of LS&A have been closed and will be used as a staging site for the project. The lots include a metered one for visitors with about 15 spaces and an even smaller lot used for university vehicles. The construction crews will park farther from campus and use a shuttle to get to the site.
