"We have been averaging 24% enrollment growth every year for the past seven years," Don Torline, president of Baker College of Clinton Township, tells GlobeSt.com. "This year, we had a 17% enrollment growth and the limiting factor was classroom space. Every single space here is full."
Baker College now has about 4,500 students in its various career education programs at its campus on 15 Mile Road and Little Mack. By this September, it will open a new classroom annex building just off Gratiot of Quinn Road, a short drive from the existing campus.
Torline says the college will spend about $3.5 million to build the new classroom building at the annex location, which will include a student lounge and about 20 classrooms. When that building is complete, in time for this fall's semester, Torline expects Baker to enroll close to 5,000 students. The new building will give Baker a Clinton Township capacity of 5,500 to 5,700 students.
Torline says the new building will be constructed to allow for future expansion on the college's new 6.5-acre location. In fall 2003, Baker opened a new 58,000-sf building that houses 29 classrooms, a library and radiology and other medical labs where students get hands-on medical training. That building, Torline notes, was expected to give the school about two years of expansion space. Instead, it was filled to capacity in its first term in use.
