The Houston-based Hines is sharing the limelight with Salisbury, NC-based Food Lion LLC, Detroit's General Motors Corp. and Servidyne Systems LLC, headquartered in Atlanta.

"Protecting the environment through sound energy management is a priority for us at Hines," Jeffrey C. Hines, the firm's president, said in a prepared statement. "Our avoided emissions through 2003 were the equivalent of removing more than 33,600 autos from the road for a year, and planting 45,800 acres of trees."

Hines, a participant since the program's inception in 1999, has brought 70 of its owned and managed office properties, with 46 million sf, up to EPA standards for the Energy Star designation. For three consecutive years, Hines also was named Energy Star Partner of the Year. The label signifies a building meets strategic energy management and environmental responsibilities.
