New Care Facility for Veterans Gets $15M Boost

RICHMOND, VA-Plans for the new Richmond Veterans Care Center have been bolstered by the US Department of Veterans Affairs recent issuing a $14.5 million federal matching funds grant for the project’s development. The 240-bed facility will be erected on a 20-acre parcel at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center on Broad Rock Blvd. A 1998 study showed that, compared to other major metropolitan areas in the country, Richmond was in the direst need of an additional facility. The only other such facility in the state, also a 240-bed center, was built in 1992 in Roanoke.

“There is a definite need for additional capacity here in the Richmond area, so I predict strong use by local veterans,” Commissioner of Veterans Services Jon Mangis says. “I also see a number of partnerships we can develop by constructing the Care Center on the existing VA hospital grounds.” The new center is scheduled to open in the fall of next year.
