The Wabeek Building, at 280 W. Maple Road, has a long history in Birmingham. Built in 1928, the building was designed by renowned Detroit architect Albert Kahn and has been designated historic by the city due to its architectural and historical significance to the community. The Wabeek Building was originally designed and built as a free-standing three-story professional office and retail building, but has evolved over the years to encompass additional storefronts along Maple Road.
Pliska said the property transaction completed a Section 1031 tax-deferred exchange. Related Cos. has been a player in Birmingham on several projects in recent years. Related developed the Palladium in Downtown Birmingham, and were joint venture partners in the Willits condominiums adjacent to the Wabeek Building. In addition to some storefronts on street level, the building offers high-end Class A office space on the second and third floor. The new offices for the Detroit area offices of international advertising firm McCann-Erickson are being built next to the Wabeek, in a former Jacobson's department store location.
