Event Boosts Convention Center Effort

BOSTON-An upcoming event is expected to book over 34,000 hotel room nights and is good news for the 516,000-sf, $800-million, taxpayer-financed facility.

BOSTON-Microsoft says it will hold its annual TechEd Convention at the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in June of 2006. The booking is one in a series of recent good news for the $800-million, taxpayer-financed facility. The event is expected to book over 34,000 hotel room nights.

The 516,000-sf center struggled with cost overruns and a dearth of bookings as it began to come online in one of the country’s worst economies in years. As of nearly two years ago, the center only had 11 definite bookings for ten years out but in its most recent announcement the MCCA says it now has 40 definite events, eight contracts pending and 75 tentative events scheduled through 2010.
