All that before the hotel even opened.

Crestline Hotels & Resorts, Inc. has opened its newly constructed 198-room Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown's Harmonie Park. The hotel at 351 Gratiot Ave. is located about a away from Comerica Park, Ford Field and Compuware's new corporate headquarters in the Downtown area. It is the first brand new hotel Downtown since the Atheneum opened in Greektown in 1993.

"The hotel business has been kind of in a lull since pre-Sept. 11," says Michael O'Callaghan, executive vice president of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. "So the fact that investors have come into this community and built a new hotel is direct indication that they anticipate that there are good days coming, specifically for the City of Detroit."

"Indicative of our future success is the fact that we have strong group and transient reservations throughout the rest of this year and into 2005," says hotel manager Ken Hammac. "We believe there was pent-up demand for a new quality hotel in this area of Downtown Detroit and we're delighted to be able to fill that need."

The hotel is expected to have an average daily rate of $118.

The Hilton Garden was developed by the Cleveland-based Ferchill Group. The city hopes that company will take over the renovation of the historic, long-abandoned Book-Cadillac Hotel. A subsidiary of Kimberly-Clark Corp. had undertaken the project but withdrew from the deal in January.
