The top three firms retained their rankings from 2001, while MW Johnson moved ahead of last year's number four, Orrin Thompson Homes. BATC compiled their annual Top 25 listing based on permit valuations.
With a very busy market in 2003, the top two builders permitted more than 1,000 units during the year. Centex Homes, permitted 1,063 units, which is 12% more than the 945 units they permitted in 2002. The total value of permits Centex pulled in 2003 was $149.8 million, an increase of 17%.
Rottlund was less than 1% behind Centex Homes in value, and permitted 21 fewer housing units. Rottlund pulled 342 permits for 1,042 planned units, valued at $148.3 million in 2003. That is 18% higher than 2002's $125.7 million for 958 units.
In third place, DR Horton showed activity of 417 permits, 734 planned units and a value of $120 million, a jump of about 28% in value over 2002. Last year DR Horton pulled 324 permits, 575 planned units and a value of $93.4 million.
MW Johnson rose to fourth place from 10th the previous year, increasing the value of permits by 172% to $109.7 million. In fourth place, the company pulled 452 permits for 790 planned units.
