The new store is at Seven Mile and Meyers and has approximately 130 employees.
"Detroit is alive and well," Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says. "We're being reborn right in front of our eyes. While the economy is in a slump and people are losing jobs, we have 100-plus people working in our neighborhood."
The former Super Kmart at the site was closed as part of Kmart Corp.'s Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. When the Super Kmart opened in 1998, it was the first major national retailer to move into Detroit in more than 30 years.
Since 1998, Detroit has seen a slow influx of big-name retailers and national brands. Last year, Farmer Jack opened a new store on Jefferson, near St. Jean. Also last year, Hard Rock Cafe and Borders opened inside the new Compuware Building. And General Motors' Renaissance Center has been luring in names like Brooks Brothers and Casual Corners clothing stores and Starbucks coffee, among others.
