The April 5 ballot question would allow the city council to sell seven acres of city-owned property to a private developer to build the hotel and conference center. The property in question is adjacent to the Troy Civic Center.

"We've had a lot of requests from companies who would like to have a facility where they can hold their meetings or take their employees," says Dennis Toffolo, economic director for Oakland County, in explaining Patterson's endorsement of the proposal. "Right now we don't have a facility that would accommodate 1,200 to 1,500 people."

Toffolo says he and Patterson would "support anything that would benefit businesses and residents."

Opponents of the land sale say they have support from several city council members and two mayoral candidates. They claim selling the land to a developer for a hotel and conference center would not be in the best interests of the city.

City voters will also be voting for mayor and for two seats on the city council on the April 5 ballot. Five other ballot proposal are also to be decided April 5.

The city says it has no specific details of the hotel-convention center, but that the center would feature some 125,000 sf to 200,000 sf of convention space and the hotel would offer 350 to 500 rooms. Final details on the proposal won't be developed unless voters approve the ballot question.

The Troy Chamber of Commerce is among the biggest backers of the proposal.
