The MEDC awarded a $1-million tax credit to Jefferson Park North LLC to build 123 homes on Charlevoix, St. Jean and Lemay streets, east of Jefferson, on the city's east side. The total development is expected to cost about $15 million. The redevelopment should generate new tax base for both the city and state, and help stabilize property values of homes in the area, Gov. Jennifer Granholm says.

The smaller grant is to be used for a retail development planned by Family Dollar Stores of Michigan, Inc. The tax credit is worth $77,766 and will be used to help prepare a contaminated and blighted property at 6300 W. Vernor on the southwest side for a 10,000-sf store. The state says the developer is investing some $777,000 in the project and the city's brownfield redevelopment authority is supplying a tax credit worth $117,645 to support the development.
