Columbus Tower Overcomes Planning Hurdle

LONDON-The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has given the green light to the UK's second-highest building, the 63-story Columbus Tower near Canary Wharf in London Docklands.

LONDON-The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has resolved to grant planning permission for the UK’s second-highest building, the Columbus Tower, which is planned for a site just to the north of Canary Wharf in London Docklands. At 775 ft the tower will be just 20 ft shorter than One Canada Square, the tallest of the Canary Wharf buildings.

The one-million-sf scheme, being developed by SKMC and Farnham Properties, comprises 325,000 sf of office space, 192 hotel rooms, 74 hotel suites, a health and fitness club, 24,175 sf of retail and 75 car parking spaces. The developers also promise a rooftop bar and restaurant and a glazed pavilion, providing an all-weather amenity area, that are accessible to the public, which will be a first for a UK tower. The Tower Hamlets planning report described it as a “world class design…that is arguably the most exciting building in London in terms of its striking design and mix of creative uses.”
