The $2-million, 32,000-sf Palazzo di Bocce is being built by Anthony Battaglia, a commercial builder who was once a member of the US bocce team.
The facility will have 10 bocce courts and a restaurant of about 4,000 sf. The building is located on Lapeer Road, near Silverbell.
Regional Italian food will be served in the restaurant. Six out of 10 bocce courts parallel the restaurant, so diners can watch while they eat.
Long a popular game of Italian heritage, bocce is perhaps best known as a recreational game that can be played in yards or parks--just about anywhere there is a reasonably large, flat service.
Organized bocce is played by two teams of up to four players each who roll or throw bocce balls at a small target ball. The organized game is played in frames on hard-surface courts until teams accumulate points toward a total, usually 12.
