Now, First Commercial says it has opened up a contest to design a piece of public art to recognize the well-known architect whose work is featured in the neighborhood around the shopping center on the east edge of Detroit's CBD.

The artwork must reflect the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The neighborhood is known locally as the Mies van der Rohe District and comprises the world's largest collection of buildings designed by the well-known figure in architecture, noted for his post World War II urban redevelopment projects.

The contest, which begins this month, will be hosted in conjunction with the University of Michigan at its Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

An information packet with contest details will be available from the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning web site at www.tcaup.umich.edu beginning April 12.
