The project is opening in phases.

Mortenson, the Minneapolis-based commercial real estate firm, is the general contractor on the project while BWBR of St. Paul is the architect. Most of the funding for the $40 million expansion--$35 million will go to Mercy in Coon Rapids and $5 million to Unity in Fridley--was done through issuing bonds. In addition, about $2.5 million is being raised locally and the Mercy Auxiliary donated $100,000.

The hospital plans to host an open house of the three-story expansion on Aug. 6.
