The construction of the center is contingent upon two tax abatement requests the automaker has submitted to the city. GM spokeswoman Darla Park says the new lab center could eventually house some 1,200 to 1,500 GM employees, about 500 of which would be new jobs. GM has not released a possible construction timetable on the project.
The City of Pontiac has not yet scheduled a date for the abatement vote. Pontiac Mayor Willie Payne has said he supports the GM plan.Elsewhere in Pontiac, Park says GM is also considering relocating 300 employees back to office space it leases at the Phoenix Center in Downtown Pontiac.
Two weeks ago, GM applied for a series of tax abatements in Warren to help finance nearly $200 million in renovations at its Technical Center there. The Warren City Council has not yet voted on the request, which has the support of Mayor Mark Steenbergh.
