The Cincinnati-based company, which owns Macy's and Bloomingdale's, says it is interested in the Chicago-based subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Target Corp. A Target spokesman confirmed Federated was interested in its department store chain.
Neither company had any further comment Wednesday.
Federated, with annual sales of more than $15.4 billion, operates more than 460 stores in 34 states, Guam and Puerto Rico. Besides Macy's and Bloomingdale's, Federated also operates under the names Bon-Macy's, Burdines, Goldsmith's-Macy's, Lazarus-Macy's and Rich's-Macy's. The company also operates macys.com and Bloomingdale's By Mail.
Target also said last month that it was exploring the possible sale of Hayward, CA-based Mervyn's. Federated and May Department Stores Co. have been called the most likely buyers of Field's.
