WILMINGTON, DE-The Port of Wilmington, the nation’s leading port for the import of bananas and palletized fresh fruits, is due for an expansion and Gov. Ruth Ann Minner has called on the Delaware River and Bay Authority to help. The governor has asked the organization to pony up $4 million to expedite the development of a 60,000-sf refrigerated warehouse. The entire project is expected to cost $7.5 million; the state is planning to cover the remaining $3.5 million.

The Port of Wilmington sits at the mouth of the Christina River off I-495 and features a wealth of open and covered storage areas, in addition to approximately 600,000 sf of temperature-controlled storage space.
