The Detroit area is home to the Army's Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, or TACOM, in Warren and Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.

Selfridge is a training facility used by active and Reserve troops from all five military branches and also houses US Border Patrol operations.

TACOM oversees development and management of all the Army's major weapon systems and has another component, the National Automotive Center, which works with the Big Three automaker and other companies on developing new technologies for vehicles, such as fuel cells.

The new state panel, which has retired U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Mansfield and Robert Truxell, who worked for defense industry contractor General Dynamics, as co-chairmen, mirrors a local panel created by Macomb County and supported by local companies, unions and governments, to lobby on behalf of the local bases.

Other members of the state panel are: Peter McPherson, president of Michigan State University; William Brooks, chairman of United American Healthcare Corp.; Retired Maj. Gen. Bill Henderson; MacDonald; Dolan; retired Maj. Gen. E. Gordon Stump; retired Brig. Gen. Roger Burrows; Mitch Irwin, director of the state department of management and budget; Dave Hollister, director of the state department of labor and economic growth; Don Jakeway, president/CEO of the MEDC.

Selfridge has 550 active-duty personnel, 1,720 civilian employees and 4,200 Reservists and Guardsmen. TACOM employs about 3,500 workers and engages in $600 million in contracts annually.
