The center already hosts more than 200 weddings a year, as well as other functions, the Archdiocese reports. The hotel. which will be completed next year, is expected to enhance that business. The church says it routinely turns away conferences and large weddings due to the lack of lodging at the conference center now.

The hotel, to be dubbed the Inn at St. John's, will be designed by architects Brown-Teefy & Associates of Bloomfield Hills. Frank Rewold & Sons Inc., of Rochester will serve as the contractor.

In 1999, Brown-Teefy coordinated the renovation of the 1940s-era buildings on the ground to transform the former seminary into today's conference facility. The seminary closed in the early 1990s. The property has 25 meeting rooms, five gardens and a 27-hole golf course. It also built the St. John's Family & Youth Center on the grounds.

The hotel's anticipated $24-million cost will be borne by a yet-unidentified developer who is forming an investment company to pay 100% of construction costs, according to Mike Gorman, the archdiocesan director of finance and administration.

The archdiocese will lease the expanded facility to the development company for $20 million on a 20-year lease. This cost, plus the profits from the hotel, will subsidize activities at the nonprofit youth center on the grounds.
