Work from the DAP is being shifted to a Ford assembly plant in Flat Rock, MI. Most of the 2,000 DAP workers are being shifted to the Dearborn Truck Assembly, which is also located on the 600-acre Rouge site.
"The DAP has served Ford for a long time. We'll eventually be announcing what will happen with the plant," the spokeswoman says.
The plant had nearly 3.4 million sf and 10 miles of assembly line, sitting on 47 acres. It was opened in 1918 by company founder Henry Ford and initially built submarine chaser boats for the US Navy during World War I.
Since the Mustang's introduction in 1964, Ford has built roughly 6.7 million of the muscle cars in Dearborn, which is home to Ford's world headquarters.
The Rouge complex has been the site of a $2-billion renovation by the company, which included an intense focus on redeveloping Dearborn Truck, which is now building the company's popular F-150. The plant is also the site of a new tourist venue, offering the first regular assembly plant tours in the auto industry in a generation.
