DCX Renovating Jefferson North Assembly Plant

DETROIT-DaimlerChrysler says it will make a major renovation of its Jefferson North Assembly Plant here. The multi-million project began this week at the plant, which assembles the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler declines to say how much money it was investing in the overhaul of the 13-year old plant, but did say it would be retooled to allow the plant to assemble more than one make of vehicle at a time. Similar plant overhauls in recent years for Chrysler and other major automakers have easily exceeded $100 million. Since the plant opened, it has focused exclusively on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a popular seller for DCX. The Grand Cherokee is being redesigned and the new version of the vehicle is to be launched later this year.
