Earlier this year, GM sold the land for the retail center to Grand Sakwa Properties LLC, a Farmington Hills development firm. Grand Sakwa plans to start construction on the center early next year and complete it in 2006. A veterans memorial is planned for the shopping center to honor its military-based history. About 30% of the site will also remain as open space.

The 83-acre site is next to GM's Grand Blanc Metal Center, where the automaker stamps a variety of vehicle parts. The 1.8-million-sf plant opened in 1942, and its history included testing World War II-era tanks.
