Eastern Market Gets $100,000 Renovation Grant

DETROIT-Eastern Market has been awarded a $100,000 renovation grant under the governor's Cool Cities program. The money will be used to upgrade the sheds that house produce vendors.

DETROIT-Gov. Jennifer Granholm hand delivered a check for $100,000 to Detroit’s Eastern Market Wednesday. But the governor wasn’t buying fruit or flowers. The $100,000 grant will pay for renovations at the century-old collection of wholesalers under the state’s Cool Cities program. The plans include upgrading all five of the Detroit market’s sheds that house vendors of fruits, vegetables and other products.

Granholm has been pushing the Cool Cities iniative, which aims to make Michigan more attractive to young college graduates, many of whom are leaving the state to start careers and families. Nearly 43,000 young, single, college-educated people left Michigan from 1995 to 2000, according to the governor.
