Hotel Solamar Rising in Downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO-JMI Realty's new boutique hotel is currently under construction, with completion slated for fall 2005. Expected to cost more than $50 million, Hotel Solamar will include 235 guest rooms; a rooftop bar and grill; a 4,200-sf restaurant; 5,000 sf of meeting rooms; and 2,400 sf of retail space.

SAN DIEGO-Construction is now under way on developer JMI Realty’s latest Downtown project, known as Hotel Solamar. Expected to incur more than $50 million in costs, the boutique hotel will house 235 guest rooms; a rooftop bar and grill; a 4,200-sf restaurant; 5,000 sf of meeting rooms; and 2,400 sf of retail space. Rising at the corner of Sixth Avenue and J Street, Hotel Solamar is located between two of the city’s most bustling areas: Downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter and the recently formed Ballpark District in the East Village. “Knowing that this is the main link from the existing Gaslamp District in San Diego to the new sports and entertainment district, we are considered a gateway project,” says Frank Ternasky of Architects Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker, which is the architectural firm that designed Hotel Solamar.

Ternasky, who is principal-in-charge on the project, says that the design of Hotel Solamar reflects its location as a gateway building. “In that gateway corner, we created what looks like an old warehouse building that would have been in that area,” he explains to GlobeSt.com. “Around it, we built the L-shaped hotel tower, so it looks almost like we built a new building around an old building.”
