$360M Baseball Stadium Could Become Centerpiece of Mixed-Use Project

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA-Will they or won’t they? No one knows if Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig will choose Northern Virginia as the new home of the Montreal Expos, but local power-players are ready, just in case. To that end, Loudoun County officials have just revealed a baseball stadium proposal presented by the Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority, Virginia Baseball Club and Diamond Lake Associates. The plan calls for a 42,500-seat stadium to be built at the heart of a 450-acre mixed-use development that Diamond Lake Associates has is in the works. Virginia is planning to rely on bonds to fund the stadium, which will cost the state $360 million.

The competition to host the team pits Northern Virginia against the likes of Las Vegas, Portland, Washington State, Monterrey, CA, Mexico, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. While there are other proposals for different areas in Northern Virginia, the Diamond Lake mixed-use project site has become the de facto stadium plan for the region.

Diamond Lake Associates–which consists of developers Beazer Homes, Centex Homes, and Van Metre Homes–is the mastermind behind the multi-faceted, multi-million dollar Diamond Lake development. Located within close proximity to Washington Dulles International Airport near Dulles Toll Road and Route 28, Diamond Lake will feature nearly 6,000 condominiums and townhomes, five million sf of commercial space including office buildings, a retail center, a hotel and a regional conference center.
