Construction is expected to begin this fall where the hospital stood for six decades. The former hospital on Southfield Freeway at Outer Drive served area veterans dating back to before World War II. It was displaced by a major new VA hospital in Detroit, the John D. Dingell Veterans Center, in 1996 and was demolished shortly thereafter.

City officials have been trying to market the 280-acre site since then. The new shopping center will consume about 38 acres.

The new development is among the biggest retail projects ever planned for Allen Park. Not far away is what is likely the biggest. Fairlane Green, a $120-million development being built by Ford Motor Land Development Corp., is under construction at Southfield Freeway and Oakwood Boulevard. That 600,000-sf center is expected to open in summer 2005.
