$200M Bio Plant Set to Open Next Month

BROOKLYN PARK, MN-Protein Design Labs is opening the 210,000-sf facility next month. It is the state's largest construction project and the state's first biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

BROOKLYN PARK, MN-Protein Design Labs is opening its $200-million, 210,000-sf biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility at 9450 Winnetka Ave. N. on July 22. When it was announced two years ago, the new plant was the state’s largest construction project and the state’s first biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

The Fremont, CA-based biotech company plans to produce therapeutic antibodies at the facility for commercial sale within three years. The facility will produce antibodies culled from mice cells, programmed through genetic engineering to act like human antibodies, made into a solution and injected into the human body to fight disease. The company now employs 180 at its Plymouth, MN, facility, and will add more than 100 more in the next two years.
