U-P hopes to sign a lease in the "next couple of months" and have the building ready for student use by January. "We are still in the throes of trying to find just the right building," says Ted Blashak, vice president of Michigan operations for U-P.

Blashak says U-P had originally wanted to operate at the University Center on Macomb Community College's Center Campus in Clinton Township. That facility, however, has no vacant space in the evening hours. The University Center is "tapped out" for evenings, MCC officials say, but can accommodate daytime or weekend classes.

With a recently opened campus in Ann Arbor, U-P now has four Detroit area locations; Sterling Heights will be the fifth. Blashak says U-P has about 10,000 students in Michigan, with about 5,000 taking classes in classrooms and the rest taking classes on line. About 80% of students work on undergraduate degrees.
